Mountain Gorilla-Volcanoes National Park

Day 1: KIGALI – MUSANZE (02H30 DRIVE) / KARISOKE RESEARCH CENTER    (2hrs30 minutes’ drive)

After breakfast at 08h00, pick up from your hotel, you will be briefed and introduced to your driver guide.  You will then proceed on a city tour of Kigali visiting The Kigali Genocide Memorial Center.

Highlight; Genocide Memorial Center- Kigali: The genocide memorial is included on every city tour and is a must-see. Rwanda’s painful past has haunted the country for years; however, their impressive recovery story has turned them into an inspiration. The genocide memorial acts as a humbling reminder to those present and honors those lost. Audio visual equipment will be provided in English or other languages spoken by clients.

At 10h00, have a leisurely drive to Musanze & VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK.

Arrive at 13h30 ready with late lunch. This afternoon you will visit the Ibyi Iwacu village for a cultural experience. While most of the focus of Volcanoes National Park falls squarely onto the animals, this ‘cultural village’ puts the spotlight back onto the people. Visitors get to experience Rwandan village life by grinding seeds, firing bows and arrows, taking part in a traditional intore dance and even partaking in the marriage of a king to his queen. After this amazing experience, you will descend from the mountains.

Day 2:  VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK (Gorilla TREK / KARISOKE RESEARCH CENTER)  – kigali   (2hrs30 minutes’ drive)

Early breakfast at the lodge then proceed to the park headquarters in time for Gorilla Trek briefing at 07h00.We will then transfer you to the start point of your guided walk that begins at 08h00. Here, your amazing adventure begins.

Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range and is the home of the rare mountain gorilla and the rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath, but the high point will be spending an hour with the remarkably peaceful gorillas despite their size and appearance as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting and raising their young. After the memorable experience, you will return to the lodge for your lunch and check out, optional visit to the Karisoke Research Center.

The Karisoke exhibit consists of seven sections:

  • Gorillas: Overview, behavior, life history of mountain gorillas
  • Dian Fossey and the history of Karisoke
  • Conservation and challenges
  • Biodiversity: Other animals and plants in the forest
  • Working with local communities
  • The Virunga mountains

All of the exhibit’s sections include panels and posters are filled with information and photos, and many also include iPads with videos, photos and additional information. For those who want to learn more about gorillas, the gorilla section includes not only detailed information about gorillas, such as diet, behavior, and social structure, but also skeletal models and audio recordings of gorilla vocalizations. Have a leisurely driver back to Kigali arrive and drop off at your hotel or Airport.
